Development Blog: Crunch Time at Fire Hose

I think that peanut butter crunch cereal is best served as dinner as you watch movies on your laptop late at night. But what the hell is up with it cutting the roof of your mouth?

As you probably already know, we make games. Specifically, we’re busting our ass making one game which we’re hoping to have out next year on XBLA, PSN, WiiWare, PC, or some combination thereof. That means we’re going to enter our game into the IGF and SMU/Guildhall competitions.

But both submission deadlines are only two weeks away (Halloween!), and we’ve still got a lot to do before we’re ready to submit! So we’ve entered crunch, that semi-hellish, always delirious period where we eat, sleep, and live in the office in an attempt to get everything squared away on time. It’s kind of annoying that we even need to do such a thing, but I suppose that the most successful endeavors always come with a lot of hard work.

Specifically, we’re cleaning up a lot of our animations, making our characters and menus look extra shiny, squashing bugs, and trying to create an awesome set of videos, trailers, and wallpapers for all of you who are eagerly anticipating finding out what the hell we’re up to. Keep checking in here over the next few weeks and we’ll finally announce our game! Also, if you live in the area and want to stop by our office with a care package of food, booze, or caffeine, it would be greatly appreciated :)

Vote for your favorite Indie Game!

Voting has opened for the independent game festival audience award for the best indie game of the year. It’s where you, people of the internet, get to vote for what you think is the best indie game to come out in 2008. It’s super easy, just go here to vote.

Me? Well, I’m probably going to vote for CarneyVale: Showtime. Granted I have a bit of a bias, but honestly the game is awesome and deserves to win (if you haven’t yet try it out on the XBox community channel!) I also like The Maw, Incredibots, Between, and Dyson, but those are just the ones I’ve played. I don’t think You Have to Burn the Rope should be on there – while it’s certainly amusing, the game is definitely not in the same league as the other titles.

Carneyvale: Showtime a IGF Grand Prize Finalist!

Carneyvale: Showtime - what GAMBIT games turn in to with an 15 months and a full staff. Great game!

So it’s no secret that Fire Hose is a huge fan of GAMBIT (especially considering that both Sharat and I are graduates of the lab) – hell, we pop over there on a regular basis to steal their food and drinks. Well, two years ago when we were making AudiOdyssey a separate Wii Remote project was being made, Wiip. The game was popular enough that the Singapore branch of the lab decided to make an XBox Community port of the game, and the result is the massively popular new title, Carneyvale: Showtime.

As a matter of fact, the game has done so well that it is now a finalist for the Seumas McNally grand prize in the Independant Game Festival awards! This is huge news, and the teamthat made the game couldn’t be more deserving. Congratulations to everyone involved, even the creepy voice over narrator who scares the bejesus out of me.
