Inspector Gadget: Man or Machine?

Inspector Gadget: The terrifying face of our future law enforcement agencies. Or hilarious show from the 80's that I kind of miss.

We’ve been kicking this question around the office for a while and are unable to come up with a satisfactory answer. Is Inspector Gadget a man or a machine?

There is ample evidence that Gadget is some sort of Cyborg with extensive implants; that would certainly explain the fact that his limbs all seem to function in mechanical ways at times and “normally” at other times. It also explains his demeanor and human personality.

But at what point does one stop being a Cyborg and become a full fledged robot? Gadget regularly has things pop out of his head (see above image), implying that his skull is storage space and indicating that he may in fact be a robot. An alternate theory is that he is entirely human and has some sort of advanced nano-robotic implants which construct (and then deconstruct) his gadgets upon verbal “Go Go” commands.

The rabbit hole goes pretty deep on this one; if Gadget isn’t human, what is his relationship to Penny? Is she actually his niece, or perhaps some sort of highly trained and competent caretaker? Evidence in the cartoon show would certainly support this theory. And what about Brain? Does he have some sort of neuro-stimulation of his own going on? How else could we explain his extraordinary intelligence as a K-9?

What We Played in 2009

These games cost money. That's bad. The games in this list? They are free. That's good! Our games? Cost money. But they're still good!

2009 was an awesome year for games! And we played a lot of them! Here’s a recap of the great games we played this year. If you haven’t tried them yet, now’s your chance! They are all FREE and just waiting for you to enjoy them.

Our year started off with a great little platformer called Eversion that has a scary twist (a retail version is in the works). We then laughed a ton while living out the Olympic dreams of QWOP. There were a few fun games in the Boston Global Game Jam, and The Redistricting Game taught us about how messed up our current electoral system is.

The Legend of Princess gave us a glimpse of what could have been a sequel to Zelda 2 (on the NES), and Dino Run ate up a bunch of our time as we ran away from Armageddon with our dinosaur brethren. Speaking of dinosaurs, have you checked out Robot Dinosaurs that Shoot Beams When They Roar yet? It’s a pivotal work in gaming. Gemcraft is an addicting little tower defense game with a fun chromatic twist, and Facade is an older game (2004 or 5, I think) but still a lot of fun to play today.

Effing Hail is a neat little flash game where you destroy buildings, airplanes, and satellites with hail, or if you are in a more constructive mood you can try building with Grow Cube. Don’t Eat the Mushroom (and Knytt Stories) is a hilarious game about what happens when you do (or don’t) eat the mushroom, and is a must play for any serious gamer. Finally this year we enjoyed racing through the apocalypse in Canabalt, and subsequently relaxed with the music of Auditorium.

These were all terrific games, if you haven’t tried them yet be sure to go play them all now!

What We’re Playing: Robot Dinosaurs

That shoot beams when they roar

Man, I get pumped just looking at this image. I wrote this entire blog post while listening to the various Dino-roars. Thanks, Nick Sumbles!

Some games don’t mess around. They’re a rare breed, the kind that looks at you square jawed with grit and determination and calmly states: “It’s go time“. Robot Dinosaurs (that shoot beams when they roar) is one of those games. From the moment the game starts atop makeout point, to the squeal of the guitars, to the over the top dialogue, to the hilarious shooting mechanic, this game is keenly aware of who it is for and what it is trying to be, and delivers. The whole game is very quick (there’s only one level) but there is a high degree of polish that you wouldn’t expect in such a short title. If you’re anything like me you’ll want to play it again at least once to try out the other character and see if there’s a difference.

I strongly recommend letting the game stay open for a little while after the credits, you’ll probably get a laugh out of it.
